Eschweiler - our twin town in Germany
This section provides information about Eschweiler, our twin town in Germany.
Eschweiler is a town of about 75,000 people situated close to the historic town of Aachen. It is also not far from the Rhine and towns like Cologne, Bonn and Dusseldorf.
You can travel by train via Eurostar to Brussels Midi where you change trains for Aachen, passing through the picturesque Ardennes.
Eschweiler itself is situated north of the Eifel Mountains, which are the continuation of the Ardennes. It is close to the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands and is one of the nearest towns in Germany to reach by car via Calais - between three and four hours away.
The Borough's twinning connection goes back to 1985 and there are numerous well developed links between common interest groups and families.
Carnival
The most important event of the year in Eschweiler is the Carnival, held normally in February immediately prior to Lent, when everyone takes to the streets in a long procession.
A group from Reigate and Banstead goes to the Carnival every year and also for the occasional long weekends.
Eschweiler visitors also make the trip over to see our Borough, usually staying for long weekends.
