Independent Police Complaints Commission
This section explains the role of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and provides external links for further information and contact details.
The IPCC is a new organisation that has overall responsibility for the system for complaints against the police.
It aims to raise standards, cut delays, increase public confidence and transform the way police forces handle complaints against the police.
The IPCC took over from the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) which ceased to exist on 31 March 2004.
The commission has the power to initiate, carry out and oversee investigations and is also responsible for monitoring the way complaints are handled by local police forces.
