Alcohol controls in Redhill
Signs are up around Redhill town centre to warn people about the alcohol controls that came into force in the town from 1 October 2007.
The controls, officially know as a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO), were introduced in partnership with Surrey Police to allow greater control over the drinking of alcohol in public and increase the Police’s powers to deal with alcohol-related antisocial behaviour in the area.
Following a public consultation on the area to be covered by the DPPO, the boundaries were altered slightly in light of comments received. The area covered by the DPPO includes areas where antisocial drinking or alcohol-related nuisance have been identified, and an outer zone has also been included to reduce the likelihood of problems being displaced into surrounding areas.

While it is not an offence to consume alcohol within a controlled area, DPPOs mean that Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) can ask people to stop drinking alcohol within the designated area and also confiscate any alcohol from people and dispose of it. If they continue to drink alcohol after being asked to stop, they are committing an offence and may be liable to a £500 fine. A person may also be arrested if they fail to surrender any alcohol to a Police Officer when asked to do so.
It will not affect peaceful family picnics for example and excludes licensed premises. Also it would not impact on the "continental style" pavement café culture, unless behaviour of individuals drinking outside necessitates police intervention in anyway.
