Economic policy
This section describes the Borough Council's economic policy.
The local economy is vibrant and the Borough has very low levels of unemployment.
The Council recognises the importance of maintaining our prosperous local economy to the well being of our communities. It has a vital enabling role in economic development, from granting permissions to partnership working and funding for environmental and other improvement schemes.
The Council works closely with local businesses, residents groups and retailers to identify priorities. It has developed good links with a number of organisations these include:
- Surrey Economic Forum
- Town Centre Management Groups
- The Federation of Small Businesses
- Business Link
- Surrey Chambers of Commerce
In particular, projects have focused on improvements to town, village and local centres, and industrial areas.
Since the 1990s the Council has supported and contributed to the work of the Town Centre Management Groups, to help improve the viability and vitality of its main shopping centres.
Through making improvements to the public realm, the Council hopes to create more pleasant surroundings and encourage further investment.
Economic intelligence
The regular monitoring of commercial planning permissions and vacant commercial premises in the Borough’s town centres, industrial estates and edge of town areas for small businesses, enables the Council can check whether or not policies are working effectively.
The Council publishes this information in a number of Monitors.
