Census 2001 overview
The Census is a survey of all people and households in the country and is the most complete source of information about the population that we have.
The Census provides essential information from national to neighbourhood level for government, business, and the community. The latest Census was held on Sunday 29 April 2001. The next will be held in 2011.
For example, did you know…
- There are two villages in the Borough where there are are more over 85’s than there are under 5’s?
- There are more single person households in the Borough, than there are households with dependent children?
- Overall in Surrey there are 5% more females than males, but five villages or towns in Reigate and Banstead have more males than females?
- Seven times as many people walk to work in Redhill as in Chipstead?
These are just some of the interesting facts you can find out from the 2001 Census.
The Census is important because it allows central and local Government, health authorities and many other organisations to target their resources more effectively and to plan housing, education, health and transport services for years to come.
For the first time central Government has made the information freely available to the public on the Internet. However, information on individual people is not released to any organisation. Measures are also taken to prevent inadvertent disclosure of information about individuals through the statistical results. For example, information will not be released for areas containing fewer than 100 households.
