Building Control

Building Regulations

This section is intended to help people looking for information about Building Regulations.

Building Regulations exist to ensure the health and safety of people in and around all types of buildings, be they domestic, commercial or industrial.

They also provide for energy conservation, and for access to and the use of buildings.

The Buildings Regulations contain various sections dealing with definitions, procedures, and what is expected in terms of technical performance of building work.

For example, they define what types of building, plumbing and heating projects amount to Building Work and make these subject to control under the Building Regulations.

They specify what types of buildings are exempt from control under the Building Regulations, and set out notification procedures to follow when starting, carrying out and completing building work.

The regulations also set out 'requirements' with which the individual aspects of building design and construction must comply in the interest of health and safety, energy conservation, and access and facilities for disabled people.

Anyone carrying out building work as defined in the Building Regulations is required by law to make sure it complies with the regulations.

Unauthorised work which is carried out may be punished by a fine and a court will order an injunction.
