Listed Buildings SPG

This page provides information on the Council's supplementary planning guidance concerning buildings of architectural and historical interest.

Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) is produced by the Borough Council to provide extra guidance on and the interpretation of Local Plan policies. 

The Council's List of Buildings of Architectural and Historical Interest was adopted on 12 March 1992 - 1st edition. Since then it has been updated, see below for details of the latest edition.

Purpose

  • to identify the types of listings and levels of protection
  • to list in alphabetical street order the Borough's stock of Statutory Listed Buildings, protected curtilage or attached structures of known interest in the grounds of Statutory Listed Buildings, Locally Listed Buildings and Ancient Monuments and identify their location on the Historic Building Maps
  • to include plans of all designated Conservation Areas.

Key messages

  • it is important that those buildings which contribute to the historic, architectural and visual character of the Borough are preserved and safeguarded from unsympathetic change
  • protection is afforded to the buildings that are included in the Statutory list of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
