Update to the Economic Evidence Base

This paper reviews previous research undertaken on the economy and summarises more recent evidence and recent policy developments.

Survey of local businesses

In Autumn 2010 we carried out a survey of local businesses to help inform the development of the Core Strategy and the Development Management and Site Allocations DPD. The results of this survey will be used, alongside other pieces of economic evidence, to update our policies on economic development and delivering employment land.

Economic Market Assessment

We commissioned consultants to produce a piece of evidence about the economic needs of the borough including:

  • an economic strategy for the borough, taking account of market realities, including growth scenarios and identifying certain sectors

  • advice on future employment land requirements, including a detailed review of sites and incorporating the views of the business community to inform the preparation of future strategies, plans, policies and partnership working.

  • Economic Market Assessment 2008

Industrial Estates Monitors

The Industrial Estates Monitor is completed annually. It provides information on the nine industrial estates in the borough identified in the Borough Local Plan as Employment Areas. It is a useful source of information on vacancy rates, lettings, and business occupiers.

Areas for Small Business Monitors

This annual monitor provides information and analyses vacancy, lettings and business occupier trends for the areas of smal business identified in the Borough Local Plan.

Commercial Monitors

This monitor provides a regular update and detailed listing of the current, amount, type and location of commercial and retail commitments above 50 square metres within the borough.
