Dangerous structures

This page tells you how to report dangerous structures.

The Council's Building Control unit is responsible for managing any dangerous structures that may occur within the borough and is on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week throughout the year.

Often we receive reports from the public. The unit will then visit the location, inspect the condition of the structure and take whatever action needed.

If a structure in the Borough is found to be immediately dangerous, action will be taken to remove the danger by either by :

  • excluding people from within or around the structure, or
  • propping or shoring the structure, or
  • demolishing the structure, or
  • making temporary repairs.

The costs for the above remedial works is charged to the owner of the building/structure.

If the structure is not immediately dangerous, the owner is identified and notified to take remedial action within a prescribed time limit. The situation is subsequently monitored.

This process often requires us to work closely with the Health & Safety Executive who operate under their own legislation and cover working premises.
