Following the announcement of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh today, the Mayor of the Borough of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Rosemary Absalom paid tribute.

"I and my council colleagues are extremely saddened by the news of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh’s passing. He will be remembered for his tireless service to our nation.

“Beginning with the navy and then, over 60 years, as the longest serving British consort, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip’s service has been both inspirational and exemplary and his loss will be keenly felt by us all.

“This is a particularly sad time and our thoughts are with Her Majesty The Queen, the Royal Family and all those who grieve His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh’s passing.

“I will be sending a letter of condolence to Her Majesty The Queen on behalf of all those who live and work in the Borough of Reigate & Banstead and, as a mark of respect, the Union Flag at the Town Hall is being flown at half-mast until the day after the funeral.”

His Royal Highness The  Duke of Edinburgh paid a number of visits to the borough over the years, most recently with Her Majesty The Queen to the reopening of the modernised East Surrey College, Redhill, in 2011.

The Palace is expected to make provision for people to pay tribute through an online Book of Condolence on the British Monarchy website at www.royal.uk.
