Young athletes from across the borough showed their sporting prowess in the annual Surrey Youth Games (Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June), winning a tally of four gold, four silver and a bronze medal.

Over 2,000 children from across the eleven Surrey boroughs and districts took part in a weekend of sporting competition at the world class Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.

180 local children competing in 28 teams

This year the borough sent our largest entry to date. Approximately 180 children, aged from seven to 16 years and spread across 28 teams, represented Reigate & Banstead in a wide range of sports including badminton, boccia, boxing, football, hockey, judo, netball, tag rugby, squash, swimming, table tennis and tennis.

In a hotly contested weekend of sport Team Reigate & Banstead rose to the challenge. For many of our competitors the event was their first experience of competitive sport on such a grand scale. Their impressive results included these medals:

  • Four gold medals – Senior Boccia, Touch Tennis, Junior Table Tennis, , Non-contact Boxing
  • Four Silver medals – Junior Squash, Judo Junior Girls , Judo Senior Girls, Senior Judo Boys

Free coaching for children

For Reigate & Banstead's young representatives it was the culmination of months of training and dedication. Training and trials, offered in partnership with our local sports clubs, began at Easter and was made possible in part by the generous sponsorship from Toyota and Better (our leisure centre partner). Around 375 children took part in the free coaching in the run up to the Games.

Celebrating Reigate & Banstead's young sports peoples' achievements, Cllr Ros Mill Executive Member for Leisure and Wellbeing said:

"What wonderful results after an excellent weekend of sports. Sending our largest ever entry to the Games and winning many medals reflects all the hard work and commitment shown by our young sportsmen and women over the past few months. Congratulations to everyone who took part and represented our borough so well.

"Thanks go to Active Surrey and Sports Sports Park for organising and hosting the event and to our team sponsors, Toyota GB and Better."
