Weekly update - 6 September 2010

This week’s Update focuses on increasing voter registration and turnout to support inclusive democratic reform.

Coalition Government democratic reform

John JoryThe Government has set out an ambitious programme of democratic reform to
provide voters with additional opportunities to offer their views and help shape Government policy and delivery.

The aim is to give local communities more power to build the Britain they want.

“Creating the Big Society is the responsibility of every British citizen,” said John Jory, Chief Executive, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council.  “Voting offers citizens an opportunity to elect the political party or individual they believe will best represent their interests and fosters cohesive communities and neighbourhoods that meet the diverse needs of existing and future residents.”

Encouraging local voting

Last week the Council sent over 58,000 registration forms to every household in the Borough.  The level of non-response last year resulted in 18,000 first reminders to households, 11,000 final reminders and a dedicated team of canvassers made 6,000 personal calls to eligible residents from whom a form had not been returned.

The May 2011 Borough elections will see 17 Borough Councillors, 8 Parish Councillors (Salfords and Sidlow Parish Council) and 18 Town Councillors (Horley Town Council) elected.

The Council runs an annual electoral canvass from September to November, sending registration forms to every household in the Borough and following up with reminder forms if there is no initial response.

Elections 2011

“Reigate & Banstead’s 68 per cent turnout at the last election was excellent,” said John Jory. “We are now targeting hard to reach groups that are less likely or able to take part in elections, ensuring that they are informed about upcoming elections, their polling station location and the importance of their voice in helping us to deliver responsive, accessible, equal services.   If people fail to register they will not be able to vote in these elections;  it may also affect their ability to obtain credit or a mortgage.  Also, every reminder costs the Council taxpayer money, so it is in everyone’s interests to register to vote.”

A Voter Registration Form is available from the Council’s website;   the Council's Help Line is:  01737 276 000;   alternatively, please visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or ring 0800 3 280 280.

John Jory and Council Leader Councillor Joan Spiers welcome opportunities to meet with local businesses and partners.  Please e-mail mary.nicholls@reigate-banstead.gov.uk to contact them and / or arrange a meeting.
