Harry Potter launches new youth cinema (8 Mar 2010)

A new cinema club especially for young people launches on Monday 15 March 2010 at the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill.

The Harlequin Youth Cinema is a monthly club for 12 to 18 year olds that will show age appropriate films chosen by young people.

The youth cinema was the brainchild of Redhill Youth Consortium and was set up by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council in partnership with Hyde Martlett Housing Association.  Now, ten different agencies are working together for the benefit of young people in Redhill.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

The first film screening is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince on Monday 15 March at 6.30pm in the theatre’s auditorium.

Tickets cost just £1.00 each and the Harlequin is offering movie-goers cost-price drinks, sweets and ice cream.

Young people's idea

Cllr Roger Newstead, Executive Member for Partnership and Communities and Executive Member for Personnel and Business Transformation, said: “As part of the Local Community Action Plan (LCAP) for Redhill East, the Council consulted widely with young people about the sort of activities they would like.

"The Youth Cinema was an idea put forward by young people, for young people, and is a great example of what can be achieved by working together. I am sure the club will prove extremely popular.”

Future dates

Cinema goers will need to complete a registration form on their first visit and thereafter show their membership card to qualify for entry.

Future showings have been arranged for Monday 19 April, Monday 10 May and Monday 14 June.

For more information and details of future films and see the Harlequin Youth Cinema page.

Background

The project has been initially funded by Hyde Martlett Housing Association, in conjunction with a proportion of Cllr Dr Daniel Poulter’s Councillors Community Award, however it is anticipated that the project will become self-financing.

Partners on the Consortium are: Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Hyde Martlett Housing, Raven Housing Trust, YMCA vinvolved, Reigate & Redhill Community Church, Holy Trinity Church, Surrey Youth Focus, The Warwick School and Surrey Police.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council have lead on the initiative but all partner agencies are helping with promotion and staffing on the night.

LCAPS

The Local Community Action Plan scheme aims to give residents a bigger say on what happens in their neighbourhood by getting an understanding of the things that are important to them, and then trying to find ways to address them.

For more information about LCAPs see the Local Community Action Plans page.
