Enjoy the great outdoors with rangers' springtime walks (16 Mar 2010)
A new series of guided walks has been put together to help you enjoy the borough's parks and countryside in springtime.
An interesting programme of guided walks and talks has been put together by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s parks and countryside team to help residents make the most of the great outdoors this spring.
The programme, which runs from March to May 2010, includes:
- an introduction to the dawn chorus
- a bluebell walk in Banstead Woods
- a nature and heritage walk around Earlswood Common
a bat spotting evening in Priory Park.
The Council’s Countryside Rangers will be leading the walks.
Knowledgeable
Cllr Julian Ellacott, Executive Member for Environment, said: “The first series of events last autumn proved so popular that we decided to organise more this year.
"They are a great way for people to get out and enjoy their natural environment and learn more about the nature and countryside on their doorstep.
"And who better to lead them than our Countryside Rangers who work on these sites almost every day. They are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the work they do to improve the borough’s countryside for everyone to enjoy.”
Dawn Chorus
Ideal for early birds, an "introduction to the dawn chorus for beginners" on 21 March gives people a chance to listen to the early morning birdsong at Redhill Common and learn to identify which song belongs to which bird.
Bluebell display
On 28 April, see the fantastic springtime display of bluebells in Banstead Woods, hear the wonderful spring birdsong and learn about the history of the woods at the same time on the "bluebells in springtime" walk.
Earlswood amble
The "Earlswood amble" on 11 May promises an enjoyable stroll round Earlswood Common to look at the wildlife and learn about the Common’s fascinating history.
Bat walk
For those who are "batty about Priory Park" in Reigate, join the Rangers on 27 May for an evening walk around the lake to spot the various bat species that live in the park. They will also have bat detectors so you can hear the bats too.
Booking details
All the events are free of charge but booking is essential as places are limited.
They are also family friendly and in some cases well behaved dogs are also welcome where stated on the programme.
