Redstone Cemetery launches new Natural Burial Area
We have developed a new area for residents who want a more environmentally friendly method of burial for their loved ones or a future resting place for themselves.
One of the lawn sections has been converted for use as a Natural Burial Area to offer choice to individuals who do not want to mark
graves with traditional headstones. A simple oak plaque will mark the grave, proving to be far more cost effective, as the additional cost of a headstone will be eliminated.
Further areas could possibly be developed should this type of burial prove to be popular. The grass in this area will not be mown during the summer months, but will be cut at the end of the growing season once the flowers have seeded; whilst the selection of trees planted, will offer year round interest, coupled with a variety of wildflowers, to attract wildlife.
Each grave can hold several burials but it will not be possible to purchase burial plots in advance, as each grave will be used in sequence, aligning each plot.
Although new, the Natural Burial Area has already garnered interest from residents and a few burials have already taken place.
Changing needs of its residents
Councillor Julian Ellacott Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “The Council is pleased to be able to offer this new service as it recognises the personal and changing needs of its residents when it comes to providing a comfortable and lasting resting place for their relatives, friends or loved ones”.
