New Chief Executive's start date announced
John Jory, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council's new Chief Executive, is to take up his post on 1 July 2010.
He said: "I am looking forward to my new role as Reigate & Banstead’s new Chief Executive and working with Members
and officers to take the Council and its services forward into the next decade, whilst continuing to improve its performance and give the taxpayer real value for money."
Council Leader, Cllr Joan Spiers, said: "I'm pleased that John will soon be joining us to develop a new style council for the future, and helping us to take this council from good to excellent.”
An experienced Chief Executive
Mr Jory is an experienced Chief Executive who has been with Mid Sussex District Council since April 2004.
When he joined Mid Sussex, it was judged to be one of the worst 40 District Councils in the country. Two years later it was shortlisted for a Municipal Journal award for “Most Effective Leadership Team of the Year”. At the same time, the council was recognised by the Audit Commission for its very good progress with the award of three stars. They said the council is now “performing consistently well and is a more confident organisation, with an enhanced capacity to deliver its priorities and service improvements”.
Over the last six years, Mid Sussex District Council has established an enviable reputation as a council providing good services at modest cost. Spend per head of population is one of the lowest in the country and the council has been recognised as one of the most efficient.
29 years in local government
Mr Jory has worked in local government for 29 years, at a range of local authorities. He was previously Director of Development Services at Ashford Borough Council in Kent and has held posts at the London Borough of Bexley, the London Borough of Richmond, St Albans City and District Council, Reading Borough Council, Surrey County Council and Rhymney Valley District Council in Mid Glamorgan. 11 years were spent working in London.
John, (50), is married to Jennie and has three children.
Mr Jory's appointment was confirmed at a special Council meeting on Thursday 27 May 2010 and follows the retirement of Nigel Clifford in May this year.
Graham Cook, the Council’s Director of Services to the Community, continues as Acting Chief Executive until Mr Jory takes up post.
