Pellikaan Construction appointed to build new Horley leisure centre

Pellikaan Construction Ltd has been appointed to build the new £7.5 million Horley Leisure Centre, starting in September.

Pellikaan were appointed by the Council's Executive at their meeting on Thursday 22 July 2010 following a competitive tender exercise earlier this year.

Pellikaan has completed over 900 leisure centre projects across Europe and has recently been awarded construction contracts with Lewisham Council and Farnham Town Council valued at £16m and £9m respectively.

The new leisure centre will be built on the site of the former Court Lodge Secondary School in Court Lodge Road.  The existing school buildings on the site are scheduled for demolition starting in late September with construction of the new building expected to start in November.  It is anticipated that the centre will open to the public in January 2012.

Impressive track record

Cllr Adam De Save, Executive Member for Leisure and Well-being, said: “This new leisure centre will provide significantly improved leisure facilities for residents of Horley and the surrounding areas.

Pellikaan Construction is an extremely experienced contractor with an impressive track record and I am looking forward to them starting work on site.

"The final design incorporates feedback from residents, sports clubs, schools and community groups and so we are confident that the centre will meet the community’s needs.”

Improved facilities

The centre will feature:

  • a 25 metre six-lane swimming pool with ramped access for disabled users
  • teaching pool
  • four-court multi-use sports hall
  • fitness gym with 50 stations and free weights
  • an exercise and dance studio
  • separate male, female, family and disabled changing areas
  • reception with viewing gallery
  • cycle parking and parking for 150 cars, to be shared with Horley Town Football Club.

Carbon savings

The new centre has been designed with environmental sustainability and accessibility in mind and includes a range of energy saving measures.  Although it will be larger than the Horley Anderson Centre, its energy usage will be 30 per cent lower per square metre.

The Horley Anderson Centre will remain open until the new centre is complete and is currently scheduled for demolition in March 2012.  The site would then become public open space, forming part of Horley’s Riverside Green Chain.

The Innes Pavilion, which is connected to the Horley Anderson Centre, will remain in its present position and will continue to be used by the Horley Sports (Social) Club.
