Horley town centre improvements start on Monday 26 July

Major works to give Horley town centre a much needed makeover begin on Monday 26 July.

The improvements, which form part of plans to help renew the town centre, include:

  • Footway and carriageway resurfacing in Victoria Road, between Horley Railway station and Russells Crescent, to improve this key gateway into the town centre

  • The creation of a new public space outside the Jack Fairman Public House, to provide an area for people to sit, meet and relax or simply pass through

  • The installation of two new controlled crossing points at the junction of Consort Way East/Victoria Road to help improve safety for pedestrians.

The improvements are being funded by monies secured by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council through the Government’s New Growth Points programme and will be managed by Surrey County Council. The majority of the works are expected to be complete by October.

Regeneration

Cllr Allen Kay, Executive Member for Regeneration and Horley Central Ward Member, said: “These works form an important part of the ongoing programme of public realm improvements to Horley Town Centre as part of the Horley regeneration.  Once complete, the town centre will be more attractive, inviting and safer for the many thousands of people that that live, work and visit the town every day.”

Road closure

During the majority of the works, roads will remain open to traffic however it will be necessary to close part of Victoria Road, between the junction with Russells Crescent and the Railway Station, for a period of two weeks, from Monday 26 July.

Whilst the closure takes place, a diversion route will run, via Brighton Road (A23) and Balcombe Road, or this route in reverse.

Cllr Kay added: “This road closure will assist us in completing the works as quickly and efficiently as possible whilst ensuring the safety of workmen and avoiding long queues of traffic.

“To minimise disruption, works have been deliberately scheduled to take place in the school summer holidays.  However we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience that you may experience whilst the improvements take place.”

If you have any queries in relation to the works, please email Horley.regeneration@reigate-banstead.gov.uk or telephone Surrey County Council’s Contact Centre on 03456 009 009.
