Weekly update - 31 January 2011
This week’s update focuses on engaging with local businesses.
As a Council, we maintain the borough as great place for residents and prime location for businesses. We do this by:
- keeping the streets clean and ensuring the town centres are clear of traffic, so they are accessible for everyone
- improving facilities for the local community and visitors, such as the new Horley Leisure Centre, the refurbishment of Donyngs Recreation Centre and a new bus station in Redhill which helped to enable a fast way bus service into the area
- Council leaders and members meeting regularly with the business community to try and represent their interests.
Working closer together
Chief Executive, John Jory, said: “We are very keen to work more closely with local businesses.
“This year, we plan to engage more with businesses through networking events and exploring ways of joint working. We’ll also be encouraging them to set up volunteering and employment opportunities for local people.
“We have a leadership role within the community to help improve the borough. By encouraging residents and businesses to work more closely we can all work together to deliver what matters the most to everyone.”
Event for local businesses
To help provide networking opportunities for businesses, we recently hosted an event at the Town Hall for the Reigate & Redhill Business Forum.
The event was organised by Morrisons Solicitors LLP, Kingston Smith LLP, estate agents Robinsons Commercial, the Federation of Small Businesses and Surrey Chambers of Commerce.
Over 70 people attended, representing the wide variety of businesses in the area including cleaning services, chartered accountants, construction, retail, recruitment, locksmiths and car dealership.
Helping the business community
Deputy Council Leader and Executive Member for Finance, Councillor Vic Broad, said: “We recognise the importance businesses make to the well being of the borough, so we were delighted to welcome them to the Town Hall.
“The event was a great success and was very well received by all who attended. It is the first of three events to be held this year.
“We want to help our business community thrive and always welcome their suggestions for how we can support them.”
