Bancroft Road car park gets "green" lights
Energy efficient lighting is being installed at Bancroft Road multi-storey car park in Reigate to save energy and money.
New, energy efficient lights are being installed at Bancroft Road multi-storey car park in Reigate as part of the Council's commitment to reduce its energy consumption.
Contractors started work yesterday (Thursday, 14 January 2010) to replace the car park’s old fluorescent lighting tubes with the new energy efficient lights.
The project is expected to save over 90 tonnes of CO2 each year, reducing the car park’s power usage by a massive 76 per cent. As well as saving energy, the change will save the Council over £20,000 a year.
Another benefit of the new lights is that they give out a whiter light which is perceived to be brighter.
In order to carry out the works and maintain the safety of the workmen, a number of parking bays will need to be cordoned off each day as the works are progressed through the building.
The contractors will endeavour to release as many spaces as possible as quickly as possible.
It is anticipated that this work will take approximately ten days to complete and should be complete by Friday 22 January (2010).
Cllr Allen Kay, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "The Council appreciates that Bancroft Road is a busy car park and will do our best to minimise the disruption to car park users whilst these works take place.
"In the meantime, I would like to apologise to car park users for any inconvenience caused and thank them for their understanding and co-operation."
Alternative parking is available in Bell Street and Upper West Street car parks.
Cllr Ellacott, Executive Member for Environment, said: "The project forms part of the Council's Sustainable Energy Strategy which has stretching long-term targets for reducing CO2 emissions, not just at the Council but borough-wide. The change also provides considerable financial savings.
"The Council has an ambitious programme of similar projects across our estate to drive forward efficiencies and play a leading role in reducing energy usage locally."
The project has been funded jointly by the Council and the government's 'Salix' interest-free finance scheme which provides money for energy efficiency projects.
Savings from energy projects like this will go into a fund to pay for further energy improvements and CO2 reductions across our estate and services.
