Weekly update - 9 August 2010
This week’s update focuses on the Horley regeneration programme and Donyngs Recreation Centre redevelopment.
Horley town centre renewal
Major work has begun to make Horley town centre a safe, clean, green and healthy area for thousands of residents and local businesses.
An inviting new public space outside the Jack Fairman public house, two new controlled crossing points at the busy junction of Consort Way East and Victoria Road and pavement and road resurfacing on Victoria Road are continuing initiatives in a broad regeneration programme that will support Horley town centre’s transformation into a more vibrant, socially, economically and ecologically sustainable community.
Councillor Allen Kay, Executive Member for Regeneration and Horley Central Ward Member, said, “Our objectives are to improve the quality of life for everyone living and working in the Borough and to attract sustainable development to the area. The Horley regeneration programme is a key initiative for the Council and we are delighted that delivery to our local communities is successfully under way.”
Reigate & Banstead Borough Council secured funding for the Horley regeneration through the Government’s New Growth Points programme and awarded the works contract to Surrey County Council.
£3.4m Donyngs Recreation Centre redevelopment
Following an extensive public consultation to ensure that service provision is tailored to meet resident requirements, work is set to commence in late August on the multi-million pound Donyngs redevelopment, which will significantly improve the range of activities available to the local community.
Key features include a new soft play facility for younger children, a spinning studio, a 120-station gym with all new equipment and a children’s gym developed to meet the needs of 12 to 16 year olds, plus a range of treatment rooms and glass-backed squash court.
John Jory, Chief Executive, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, said, “Offering residents an excellent range of sporting, leisure and cultural activities helps to create healthy, sustainable communities and supports high-quality daily life for everyone living and working in the borough. The council’s commitment to improving all aspects of our local communities is embedded in our service provision.”
Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is providing £2m of the £3.4m project cost, with Nuffield Health, which manages the centre, contributing £1.4m.
John Jory and Council Leader Cllr Joan Spiers welcome opportunities to meet with local businesses and partners. Please email mary.nicholls@reigate-banstead.gov.uk to contact them or arrange a meeting.
