Weekly update - 31 August 2010

This week’s update focuses on strengthening our local communities through volunteering and involvement in social action.

Mayor’s Community Awards

The Government’s vision for a Big Society will give citizens, communities and local government the power and information they need to come together, solve the problems they face and build the Britain they want. An integral part of this is encouraging volunteering and social action through targeted initiatives that strengthen local communities and support vulnerable and disadvantaged residents.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s annual Mayor’s Community Awards, which raise awareness of the invaluable work that local volunteers do in our communities, have just been announced for 2010.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Reigate & Banstead Voluntary Service for these awards,” Mayor Councillor Pay said the Mayor, Councillor David Pay. “We look forward to receiving a wide range of nominations from residents, community groups and voluntary organisations, recognising the outstanding contribution that volunteers make to our communities. We also hope that the awards will inspire more people in the Borough to participate in voluntary work.”

The award categories for nominees are: Young Volunteer Award, Volunteer Award, Team Award and Individual Trustee Award or Team Trustee Award. The judging panel will also choose an Outstanding Voluntary Contribution from the entries received for the other award categories, for the volunteer who the Panel feel has made a significant impact on the community through their work.

For more information, please view the Mayor's Annual Community Awards Scheme page. Alternatively, please email rbcvs@btinternet.com or ring Reigate & Banstead Voluntary Service on: 01737 763 156. The deadline for nominations is 30 September 2010.
