Weekly update - 23 August 2010

This week’s update focuses on the Council’s recent £1.3m New Growth Points funding award.

£7.8m community regeneration

New Growth Points and Growth Areas are a key part of the Government's programme to increase new housing supply levels to 240,000 homes a year by 2016; when launched in October 2006, the aim was to build two million homes by 2016 and three million by 2020. Nationally, more homes are needed in response to our growing population and a desire for more people to live independently.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has just been awarded £1.3m of New Growth Points funding – the final John Jorytranche of a £7.8m fund granted to the Council since 2006 to support the  large scale regeneration of Redhill and Horley town centres, Preston Estate and new neighbourhoods in Horley.

“Reigate & Banstead Borough Council was the only local authority in Surrey to be conferred New Growth Point status,” said Council Chief Executive John Jory. “The Council actively identifies needs and opportunities for change throughout the Borough and is committed to private and public sector partnerships to support thriving  local communities that can withstand challenging economic conditions and provide a platform for future socio-economic growth.”

Sustainable growth

The Council aims to balance essential regeneration with the traditionally clean, green, safe communities the Borough is renowned for.

Councillor Allen Kay, Executive Member for Regeneration, said, “The essence of the Council’s spatial strategy isCllr Kay the  regeneration of targeted areas to support social, economic and environmental improvements.   An appropriate supply of good quality housing, including affordable housing for key workers and those in lower income groups, will support our sustainable communities.”

John Jory and Council Leader Councillor Joan Spiers welcome opportunities to meet with local businesses and partners. Please email mary.nicholls@reigate-banstead.gov.uk to contact them and arrange a meeting.
