Talented youngsters can be stars for a year

The showbiz dreams of three young people have been given a massive boost thanks to the Council’s Star for a Night scheme.

Jessica Munnery, aged 11, from Horley and Shanice Bulmer, aged 14, from Merstham have both been awarded a year’s scholarship to local performing arts academy ‘So You Wanna Be!’, with Jade Rumbelow, aged 15, from Redhill getting get a term’s tuition.

Commitment

The three received the reward for their commitment to the Star for a Night show, held at the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 April (2010).

Jessica, one of Star for a Night's dancers, Shanice and Jade, both singers in the show, were told that they had won the incredible prizes during the show’s finale, in front of a packed audience.  The trio were picked from the cast of almost 100 youngsters, who put on a fantastic performance of drama, dance, song and comedy.

Talent

Sue Sergeant, the Council’s youth development officer who organises the show, said: “It was a great night and everyone involved put on a fantastic performance. We have so many talented young people in the borough.

“Jessica, Shanice and Jade impressed the coaches with their commitment to the show, their dedication in attending the rehearsals and their enthusiasm and talent. They all gave 100 percent to the whole event."

Sue added: "The scheme is funded by sponsorship and would not have been possible without the generous support of Towers Watson and So You Wanna Be! and Councillors Dr Lynne Hack and Dorothy Ross-Tomlin who pledged their councillors awards towards the scheme.

"Thanks also go to the team of professionals who provided invaluable coaching in the run up to the event and of course the whole cast who have worked really hard over the last three months to put on such a wonderful show.”

Best of British

The theme for this year’s Star for a Night was ‘Best of British’ which took the audience on a journey through some of the most iconic British moments in popular culture, from the 1940s to the current day.

The show featured songs from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Britpop scene, The Prodigy, Gorillaz and many more.  The grand finale saw all the performers take to the stage in a show-stopping medley.

The Star for a Night scheme, now in its tenth year, is intended to give youngsters the chance to do something they would not ordinarily have the chance to do, to step out of their everyday environment and into the limelight.

All the performers involved had to get through auditions in January to get a part in the show and received professional tuition from singing tutors, choreographers and acting coaches in the months leading up to the big day.
