Self assessment for low risk food businesses
Although you will need to register your food business we do not routinely inspect low risk food businesses. However, you must provide us with specific information about your food business in order to help us decide if it is a high or low risk business. When we receive this information from you Officers review the food safety risk of your business based on the information that you provide. Please see the information below that explains our strategy for low risk food businesses and also includes our low risk food business safety questionnaire.
Alternative enforcement strategy for low risk food businesses
You may be aware that our Food Safety Team carries out food hygiene inspections of premises in the Borough that prepare, store or distribute food. If you operate a food business; in your home, in a commercial or retail premises, a mobile catering unit or van, a market stall, or you run a community group or organisation in a church hall or school premises your business may be designated as a low risk food business by the food safety team.
To help fulfil the legal requirements of our food safety inspection programme and to determine if your business should be included in our inspection programme, we contact our low risk food businesses every three years and ask them to complete a self assessment low risk food business questionnaire. The information you provide will help us to decide whether a food hygiene inspection should be carried out.
Received a 'your next food safety Inspection is due' letter and/or email?
Every year, normally sometime between September and December we send out a letter and/or email to our currently registered low risk food businesses that are on our three year recurring inspection programme (1 letter/email every 3 years not each year). Whether you are still trading or not we require a questionnaire return from you so we can up date our records in accordance with the Food Safety & Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 requirements.

Please note the response time required on the letter. As mentioned previously we legally require the information from you under the Food Safety & Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 requirements. If we have not heard back from you by the required response time we will need to actively chase the completion of the questionnaire with yourself and/or your head office (if applicable). A late return can be seen as reflecting poorly on the management of a food business and this may result in us logging a late return on your food business file.

Low risk businesses are currently determined by a risk rating scheme.
To validate this arrangement please note that we will need to inspect a small, random sample of businesses and officers will still have the right to enter any food business at "all reasonable hours" e.g. during opening hours.
