Environment facts and figures

The Borough of Reigate and Banstead covers 12,900 hectares of which 8,888 hectares (69%) is Metropolitan Green Belt. Predominantly open countryside, the Borough is traversed by the North Downs escarpment – a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and the Greensand ridge. The Borough contains part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Local Nature Reserves as well as Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings.

Although the Borough has a high quality natural environment, the levels of environmental pollution caused by vehicle emissions coupled with the increasing challenges faced relating to water supply, sewerage, waste management and overall air quality is a cause for concern. In addition, the Borough is subject to significant pressures for development. Retaining the quality of open spaces, countryside, pleasant residential areas and the Borough’s heritage is of paramount importance.
