Waste policy
This section provides an introduction to the Council's policy on recycling.
Do you care about the future of the local environment?
The Borough Council does and we are involved in a wide range of initiatives to minimise waste, increase recycling, and provide a sustainable future for us all.
We provide a house to house collection service for all paper, card and cans, which is currently used by 77% of householders.
Recycling centres
We also have a large number of recycling centres located across the Borough. We are constantly reviewing our existing sites to refurbish and extend the materials collected and to identify areas for new recycling centres. We want to ensure sites are located in places which are well-used on a day to day basis.
These sites have bins for paper, card, cans, plastic bottles, glass (green and unusual colours, clear and amber) and in some cases textiles, books and foil.
Garden Waste Service
The Council is currently running a Garden Waste Service which involves house to house collections throughout the Borough.
In April 2005 we introduced plastic bottle bins at selected recycling sites. Unfortunately we were unable to introduce plastic bottles to all sites as space can be limited at sites due to the number of bins required. The Council is still identifying other sites and hopes in the long term to be able to offer an increased number of plastic bottle banks across the Borough.
Eastern Surrey Waste Strategy and Corporate Plan
We also work closely in partnership with neighbouring local authorities on plans like the Eastern Surrey Waste Strategy.
Waste reduction, re-use, recycling and the environment has been placed as the top priority of our 2009-12 Corporate Plan.
We hope to be able increase the range of materials that can be recycled within the Borough and review our house to house collections.
