FAQs for Garden Waste Service

This page explains the cost, registration process and contents of bins for the Garden Waste Service.

How can I sign up for this garden waste service?garden waste service logo

You can register online on the Apply for it page using the Garden Waste Service registration form, by telephoning the Garden Waste Hotline 01737 276444 or visiting by one of the Council’s Help Shops.

Once you have registered, you will receive an information pack through the post providing you with details of your collection days, what materials can and cannot go into the bin and the terms and conditions of the service.

A new 240 litre brown wheeled bin will be delivered to your house within 3 weeks of registering. If access to your property is difficult and your refuse is currently collected in pre-printed black refuse sacks provided by the Council, there is a three-bag alternative to the garden waste bin. Please request this option when you register for the service.

What is the cost of joining the scheme?brown bin with green sack

For annual subscription costs please visit the Garden Waste Service fees.

This covers the hire of a 240 litre brown wheeled bin (or three-bag alternative for restricted access properties) and a fortnightly collection of your garden waste throughout the year with the exception of the Christmas holiday period.

If you wish to have more than one bin, the cost will be the subscription charge for each wheeld bin, up to a maximum of six bins per households.

If you only generate a small amount of garden waste then you could consider sharing a bin with neighbours.

Alternatively if you have a small amount of garden waste you could request a 60 litre reusable garden waste sack. There is a maximum of one sack per household (excluding restricted access properties).

Please note that the cost of the service will be attributed to one property only and the bin will need to be presented for collection at the registered property on collection days.

You can see full details on the Garden Waste Collection Service fees page.

How do I pay for this service?

The Council’s preferred payment method is direct debit. You will be able to set up a direct debit when joining over the phone, online or at a Help shop. Your annual renewal will then run automatically and you will be notified four weeks in advance of any changes in the price of the service.

If you do not want to pay by direct debit, you will be sent an invoice that you should pay by return. Due to the higher cost to the Council of processing invoice payments, there will be an additional handling charge added to your fee.

You can see full details on the Garden Waste Service fees page.

When did the service start?

The new garden waste service started from 15 September 2008.

The service will be a fortnightly collection and your personal collection will commence on the next scheduled collection day (i.e. the same day as your rubbish is collected) on your collection week (your collection week, either purple or yellow, will be notified in your membership pack) following delivery of your bin.

See the Garden Waste Service page for the collection calendar.

How much will the bin hold?

The brown wheeled bin holds 240 litres, which is equivalent to around 5 of the old plastic garden waste sacks.

The bins will take most material if hedging and shrubs are at the base covered with grass cuttings. The material that can go into the bin is garden waste including prunings, hedge trimmings, weeds, grass cuttings and small branches up to 10cm in diameter.

The garden waste service cannot take kitchen waste including vegetable peelings, soil, rubble or stones, any plastic including plant pots, seed trays, plastic of biodegradable bags, card, paper or animal bedding.

All garden waste will be collected in a dedicated vehicle and will then be taken to a centralised composting site where it will be made into soil improver, making it an easy and environmentally friendly way to dispose of your garden waste.

Delivery of garden waste containers

Your garden waste container will be delivered within three weeks of joining. If your container has not arrived within this time, or your delivery is incorrect, please call the Garden Waste hotline on 01737 276444.
