Food Safety Team
This page is about the activities of the council's food safety team.
The Borough Council's Food Safety team works with businesses to ensure food prepared and sold within the Borough is safe to eat and adequate hygiene standards are maintained.
Environmental Health Officers achieve this through:
- regular risk-based inspections of all premises
- taking food samples for laboratory testing
- investigating food complaints from the public
- following up on notifications of food poisoning.
We provide best practice guidelines for all food businesses.
We produce helpful leaflets in a variety of languages, educational videos are available on request or loan, and officers will provide advice and help wherever possible.
We link up with other local authorities, agencies and organisations to coordinate activity and in an effort to provide consistent advice and enforcement so as not to burden businesses unnecessarily.
Enforcement
On the majority of occasions, businesses co-operate in complying with legal requirements, but where necessary officers will enforce the law in accordance with our published enforcement policy.
Enforcement options include formal notices, closure, prohibition, and prosecution of a business or an individual.
We also respond to the needs of the public through health promotional activities that aim to get across the importance of food safety and good hygiene in our daily lives.
