Street cleaning

This page is about leaf sweeping and street cleaning in the borough.

Autumn leaf sweep

Reigate and Banstead’s sweeping team are up to their wheels in leaves following this year’s leaf fall. With autumn well and truly underway an additional sweeper has been hired for ten weeks to back up the existing fleet of six mechanical sweepers.

Neighbourhood Services Officers have identified those roads that suffer from significant accumulation of leaves and our sweepers are targeting piles of wet leaves in order to keep footpaths open and pedestrian routes clear.

All of the leaves collected are composted, which will amount to around 500 tonnes.

Leaf sweeping will continue until early January, by which time the borough will be substantially clear of leaves.

Compost your leaves

Residents are encouraged to create leaf mulch at home by composting fallen leaves or to subscribe to our garden waste recycling service and use your brown bin to store cleared leaves until collection for composting.

Report it

Members of the public requesting an additional leaf sweep should contact our Help Line on 01737 276000 of use our report it online.

Usual street cleaning

  • the borough's town centres are swept on a daily basis
  • residential roads are swept regularly
  • rural roads are swept twice a year.

The Tidy Britain Group assess districts councils across the country on a range of criteria and provide each council with a cleanliness index.

Reigate and Banstead achieved a cleanliness index for 2007/8 of 9%. This means that 91% of our streets and open space achieved a cleanliness grade of B or better - well above the national average.
