Merstham consultation feedback 2011

This page has the new proposals for Merstham - feedback from summer 2011 public consultation.

During August and September 2011, the council and Raven Housing Trust consulted local residents on the new proposals for Physical regeneration of the Merstham estate in the Portland Drive area.

Over 180 people visited the exhibition, which was based at the Merstham Community Facility. Over 200 feedback forms were received. The comments received have been used to update the draft Merstham Estate Local Centre Planning Framework, which will be considered by the council’s Executive on 17 November 2011.

The following summarises the key findings and how they have been incorporated into the Planning Framework:

Consultation findingCouncil response
The majority of people said that the hub should be on the ground floor on the Iron Horse site.People's views will be an important factor in deciding where the hub goes. A decision will be made once further testing has been undertaken on the financial viability of each option.
The most popular responses for things which the hub should include were: the library, a meeting place for local groups, internet access, social events and access to the local police team. These responses are very helpful in shaping the services which are planned for the hub.
Concern that local shops and services may be lost.Raven will develop, own, let and manage the new retail units and ensure that a core provision of important and popular local shops and services are provided. These consultation findings and discussions with shop keepers will inform their plans.
People want a balance of housing types and sizes.A mix of housing types and sizes are proposed across the Planning Framework area, the focus being on smaller market housing. The Planning Framework proposes up to 20 affordable homes.
One idea was to rename Portland Drive if it is redevloped. This is something that could be considered if the regeneration proposals are delivered. Public consultation would be undertaken on any proposed name change.
Some residents are concerned about parking and pressure on local services.Parking spaces will be provided for the new homes, community hub and shops. Work with Surrey County Council will help to minimise the impact of additional traffic, and to improve primary and secondary school provision in the area.
Keen to see improvements to open spaces - a range of suggestions were put forward.Responses to this question will help to inform proposals to upgrade the public areas in and around Portland Drive.
Some concerns re building on the triangle site.Evidence indicates that Merstham has an above average quantity of open space. Part of the triangle site will be retained and upgraded as open space. Other areas of open space will also be upgraded.
