Delivering change in Horley
This highlights some of our regeneration achievements so far such as the Leisure Centre, Safety and Traffic Management, Town Centre Regeneration, Fastway and Transport Interchange Projects.
Partners have already begun to deliver a range of exciting projects that will benefit all those who live and work in
Horley.
Just some of the projects that the Borough and County Councils have worked with partners to implement to date include:
Fastway
The introduction of the high quality Fastway 20 service running from the new neighbourhood in the North East, to Horley town centre and beyond to Gatwick and Crawley.
Horley Station
Horley Station has been refurbished to provide a more attractive and accessible facility for passengers who use the London to Brighton main line and includes an improved and more accessible ticket hall and the installation of new lifts to station platforms.
Horley Transport Interchange
The transformation of the old Horley station into a new transport interchange, which has won a prestigious national Rail Business Award, for station excellence.
The improvements that have been made benefit train and bus users, cyclists and pedestrians and include:
- new bus turnaround and shelters
- new cycle shelters
- improved lighting and CCTV coverage
- a new car park providing 68 spaces
- step free entrance into the station form the car park directly onto platform 1
- passenger drop off point
- refurbished station waiting rooms.
Improving safety and traffic management
Horley Row Crossing
Horley Row Crossing has provided a new safe toucan crossing point for school children and other pedestrians at this key location – completed in 2009.
Balcombe Road improvements
Balcombe Road improvements have provided a shared footway and cycle scheme to link Smallfield Road to Oakwood school and the town Centre – completed in 2009.
The Langshott Traffic Management Scheme
The Langshott Traffic Management Scheme has been introduced to help reduce ‘rat running’ of traffic and provide a safer environment – completed in 2009.
Station Approach footway improvements
Station Approach footway improvements have provided an enhanced pedestrian link from the Town Centre to Oakwood School – completed in 2008.
Town Centre Regeneration
Public realm work improvements have been implemented to create a more attractive, safer and more accessible town centre environment.
Phase 1 works included:
- the installation of a new raised table at the junction of Victoria Road and Consort Way to slow traffic
- a new zebra crossing on Consort Way and a pedestrian crossing outside the library
Phase 2 works included:
- the creation of a new public space outside the Jack Fairman public house for people to meet, sit and relax or simply to pass through
- a new signalised controlled crossing point at the junction of Victoria Road/Consort Way
- reconstruction and resurfacing of the footways and carriageway on Victoria Road from Horley station to Russells Crescent
The Central Car Park has also been resurfaced and relined to help improve facilities for those who wish to park in the town centre.
Horley Leisure Centre
The regeneration and growth of Horley will bring major benefits for people who live and work in Horley. One of the first major projects people will be able to enjoy will be a new high quality leisure centre which will open in 2012.
The new leisure centre is being built on the former Court Lodge Secondary School site on Court Lodge Road.
The facilities
The main facilities include:
- 25m x 6 lane swimming pool
- 7m x 13m teaching pool
- 33m x 18m sports hall (4 badminton court size)
- large fitness gym – 300m2
- fitness and dance studio
- wet and dry changing rooms
- disability access to all areas
- reception and seating area.
Horley Young Peoples’ Centre
Horley Young Peoples’ Centre was opened in 2010 by Surrey County Council.
The Centre provides a modern and relaxed space for over 400 young people aged between 11-19 years old to access a variety of activities as well as advice, guidance and counselling services.
