At the Annual Council meeting on 19 May 2011, Councillor John Stephenson, Ward Member for Woodmansterne, Chipstead and Hooley, was elected Deputy Mayor.
Biography and background
Councillor John Stephenson has been a Borough Councillor since 2007 when he was elected to represent the ward of Woodmansterne, Chipstead, Hooley and Netherne. In this time he has served on the Planning Committee, Overview and Scrutiny Panel and Regulatory Committee. He is also a Council appointed Trustee of The Colman Institute in Reigate and of the Mary Stephens Foundation in Chipstead.
Councillor Stephenson and his wife Geraldine, come originally from Yorkshire, but are long time residents of the Borough, having lived in Chipstead since 1975. Not counting two short years in Australia. Together they have three children and four grandchildren who live in Yorkshire and Oxfordshire resulting in a lot of travel to spend time with family.
Councillor Stephenson is a qualified accountant having trained in the Electricity and Gas industries before going to university at the Bradford Management Centre. Subsequently, his career was in the general insurance industry, only later in life becoming a Councillor when he retired from full time work. He still prepares annual accounts for a small number of companies and is the honorary examiner for several local organisations. John has also been chairman of the Chipstead & Hooley Bonfire Association for many years.
Outside of his Council and other duties, John likes to play golf at Walton Heath and when he can, enjoys holidays skiing in the Alps, or golfing in France.
