Register of Electors

This page explains the Register of Electors and how to make sure you are on it.

Annual Registration

We publish a Register of Electors annually. This year the Register of Electors will be published on 16 October 2012. An electoral registration form will be sent to every property in the borough in early July. By completing and returning your form you can ensure you are registered to vote for the following year.

This is a change from previous years, where you will have received your registration form in September. This is due to the election of a Police and Crime Commissioner on 15 November 2012. By sending annual registration forms earlier than in previous years, we can make sure that the Register of Electors is up to date for the election in November.

Only people whose names appear on the register are allowed to vote. You can also be added to the Register of Electors throughout the year from December to June.

People who are entitled to register to vote are:

  • British Citizens.
  • Citizens of the Irish Republic.
  • Citizens of other European Countries - E.U. Citizens can vote at local government and European Parliamentary Elections only.
  • Qualifying Commonwealth citizens. This means Commonwealth citizens who have leave to enter or remain in the UK or do not require such leave.

Changes during the year

Between December and June the register is updated monthly. If you have changed address since completing an annual registration form, if you will soon be 18, or if your name does not appear on the Register at all, you can complete a Voter Registration form to have your name added to the Register.

This form must be completed and signed by each person applying to be added to the Register and returned to the Electoral Registration Officer, Town Hall, Castlefield Road, Reigate, Surrey, RH2 0SH.

Register of Electors

There are two versions of the Register:

Full Register of Electors

This includes everyone who is entitled to vote. It is available to check, under supervision, at the Town Hall, Castlefield Road, Reigate, Surrey, RH2 0SH only.

It is also used by other organisations for prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when you apply for credit. The law says who can have a copy of the full register and what it can be used for.

Edited Register of Electors

This is available for sale to anyone who requests a copy and can be used for any purpose.  You can ask that your name does not appear on the Edited Register by ticking the appropriate box on the annual registration form, voter registration form or by contacting the Council on 01737 276000 or email to elreg@reigate-banstead.gov.uk.
