County Council elections

This page provides information about County Council elections.

Election results

See the Results of the Surrey County Council elections 2009.

What took place

County Council elections take place every four years, usually on the first Thursday in May.

In 2009, however, the County Council elections were combined with the European Parliamentary elections which were held on Thursday 4 June 2009.

The next County Council elections will take place in 2013.

By-elections can be held at any time if a vacancy arises on the Council.  For further information please email elreg@reigate-banstead.gov.uk.

List of nominations and candidates

The Returning Officer must receive nominations by no later than noon 19 working days before Election Day.

The nominations received will be available here before the next election.

County electoral divisions and electoral cycle

There are 9 County Electoral Divisions  in the Borough each represented by one Councillor.

County Councillors are elected for a four-year term.

The County Council elects all of its Members at the same time every four years.

Becoming a candidate

Many people choose to stand in local elections as a representative of a political party, but individuals can stand in their own right as an ‘independent’.  Candidates who stand on behalf of a political party will have gone though a formal selection process.

To stand as a councillor you must:

• be aged 18 or over
• live or work in the County, or own property there
• not work for Surrey County Council or hold a politically restricted post at another council
• not be bankrupt or have been sentenced to prison for three months or more in the past five years
• be nominated and seconded and supported by eight other people from the Electoral Division you want to stand in.
