Remit

The review is examining the conditions that apply to the operation of Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Vehicles and the taxi rank provision available within the Borough. One of the purposes of the review was to examine whether the existing restricted numbers practice for Hackney Carriages was sustainable in the longer term and to provide options on this for the future.

Current position

As part of the information gathering exercise for this review the Head of Environmental Health Services published an article in the Borough News, undertook specific targetted consultation, produced online web consultation under the guidance of the Panel. The Panel also interviewed specific members of the trade on the review to establish a clear understanding of the implications for any changes proposed.

The analysis of the review work and evidence received is being prepared so that the Panel can review all of the issues proposed to provide a reasoned approach and justification for its final conclusions and recommendations.

The Panel undertook an earlier review of this service and presented its findings to the Executive who requested that further work be undertaken before any of its findings could be implemented. The Panel is currently completing the more fundamental review requested.
